What You Need to Know

Facebook account cloning is a widespread scam where criminals create fake profiles using your name, photos, or slight variations of your identity to trick your friends and contacts. When someone receives a friend request from “you” even though you’re already connected, it’s a strong sign your profile has been cloned—not necessarily hacked. These fake accounts are used to gain trust, spread scams, steal personal information, or deliver malware through links and messages. With tens of millions of cloned accounts circulating, this scam continues to thrive despite Facebook’s efforts to remove them.

What You Should Do

If you receive or notice a duplicate friend request, immediately alert your friend and report the cloned profile to Facebook so it can be taken down. Warn your contacts not to accept new friend requests from you and remind them to be cautious of messages that seem unusual. Strengthen your own account by using a strong, unique password, enabling two-factor authentication, and reviewing your privacy settings to limit what scammers can copy or exploit. Above all, never click links or share personal information unless you have verified the sender’s identity.
