Earlier this year, a 77-year-old man handed nearly $400,000 over to a scammer. What did he get tricked into draining his massive retirement savings account for? Gold. The catch? The gold didn't exist.

Gold courier scams are some of the most sinister and diabolical out there. They prey on the innocent and—sadly—gullible, elderly, especially those with large retirement accounts.

These folks make such prime targets for the scammers because they are naturally more trusting, often several years behind digital safety news, and tend to have more money than younger victims.

How fake gold couriers opperate

Victims are typically told via a fake email, text, or phone call that their bank account has been compromised. Next, they are instructed that a government agency is stepping in to help them transfer their savings into gold. This gold, the scammers tell them, is a hedge against bank failure and a safeguard that will prevent their retirement funds from going up in smoke.

The irony is not only heartbreaking, but this scam literally devastates a victim’s life. It’s more than a little sickening.

Gold is seen as a secure investment

By preying on the popular (and mostly true) notion that gold is not only safe investment, but a wise one as well, the scammers are able to quickly dupe someone out of hundreds of thousands of dollars seemingly overnight.

Rapid liquidation is the name of the game

What the scammer’s aiming for is to trick their victim into quickly liquidating as much of their retirement accounts and savings as quickly as possible.

If they can get them to act immediately, the money transfers are often completed before the retiree has any clue what happened.

AI is enabling and empowering the scam

Naturally, the scammer will string them along with fake screenshots and even phony gold investment websites designed to look like a convincing reputable savings dashboard. Thanks to AI-powered coding and web development, a clever scammer can have a convincing site up and running in no time.

If the person ever starts to get suspicious, a scammer can easily utilize an AI-powered chatbot or fake customer service representative to assuage any fears, keeping the scam going on past the point of no return.

How the criminal gets away with it

Sadly, most of the scams in this vein rely on nearly untraceable methods for laundering and transferring around money. Typically, Bitcoin ATMs or other popular cryptocurrencies wallets are the primary vectors for attack, making it tricky for federal officers to track down and prosecute.

The more intelligent scammers are often hiding behind several layers of protections, red herrings, and other failsafe’s to keep them out of the spotlight long enough to make a clean getaway.

What can you do about this?

  1. First and foremost, never ever trust an email, text message, or phone call even if it claims to come from the government. Whenever a message implies urgency, it’s usually being employed to supplant common sense and get you to act against your better judgment.
  2. Always double-check with the actual source. If something claims to be from somewhere, do the due diligence of looking up an actual contact method for that “somewhere” and verify the message actually came from them.
  3. Utilize a financial account monitoring or security tool. More than likely, your bank already has a robust service exactly for these kinds of situations. When in doubt, speak with a representative from your actual bank and discuss potential safeguards, insurances, and other security notifications. Doing so will give you an increased peace of mind.
