- Fake Amazon Recall Text Message Scam
What You Need to Know
Scammers are sending text messages that appear to come from Amazon, warning customers about a recalled product they allegedly purchased through Amazon Prime. The message often looks convincing and may even appear to come from a legitimate Amazon phone number due to a technique called “spoofing.” The text includes a link directing victims to a counterfeit Amazon website that looks nearly identical to the real one. Once there, victims are prompted to enter their Amazon login credentials.
If you enter your username and password, scammers can immediately take over your account, make unauthorized purchases, access stored payment methods, and potentially steal additional personal information. Although Amazon removed more than 55,000 fake websites in 2024 alone, scammers continue creating new ones, making this an ongoing threat.
What You Should Do
Do not click on links in unsolicited text messages claiming there is a product recall or issue with your Amazon account.
Access Amazon directly by typing www.amazon.com into your browser or using the official Amazon app to verify whether a recall notice is legitimate.
Contact Amazon Customer Service directly at 1-888-280-4331 if you have concerns. Never call a number provided in a suspicious text message.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on your Amazon account to add an extra layer of protection beyond just your password.
Set up an Amazon Passkey, allowing you to log in using Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or a device PIN instead of relying solely on a password.
Monitor your Amazon account and payment methods regularly for unauthorized purchases or suspicious activity.
Stay skeptical of urgent messages demanding immediate action. Scammers rely on panic and pressure to get you to act quickly without verifying the request.
